Drawing on Your Imagination

For kids throughout the country, Saturday mornings are the answer to weeklong prayers. It's got nothing to do with it being the end of the week or that there's no school or even that it is the first day of the weekend. It has to do with the cartoons on TV. And it's not just the kids who are getting excited.

Cartoons have been around for more than fifty years, and they are still going strong. The Walt Disney Company built an empire based on little flat images that look as if they are alive. Several of the longest-running prime-time shows on TV are animated. Why? What's the magic of animation?

The magic is that we believe it. When a real person gets hit in the head with an anvil or plummets thousands of feet over a cliff, we are appalled and disgusted. We hardly enjoy ourselves. But cartoons are different. Not only are we not disgusted, we giggle and guffaw.
